Household burns are painful and annoying, yes, and some of them are bad enough to go to the emergency room. This one was hiding a nasty secret, even though it looked innocent at first. BURN TREATMENT PROCEDURE: 1) You may put cool water on it for comfort (NOT ICE!! = it’ll just shock your injured skin in the other direction and likely cause its own damage on top of what you already have:ie FREEZER BURN). 2) There is a legitimate reason for NOT breaking the blister–as the video demonstrates–but if it happens use: Ouch-Free Antiseptic Foam and/or/with Saline Wash (Antiseptic foam may be better), Clean Gauze held in place with Self-Adhesive Gauze Tape *Change dressing daily AND/OR whenever bandage gets wet Why not use Alcohol/Peroxide?= Alcohol dilates blood vessels (so if you are treating a cut, you’ll find that you bleed MORE) and it is very harsh to skin (notice that “frosty” effect after alcohol dries on your skin? Yeah. Not good for injuries). Peroxide is more of a foaming cleanser than a disinfectant. If you got a cut with dirt in it, the foaming effect can loosen that up, and that’s pretty much all it’s good for. The “foamy” effect that we grew up thinking was the Peroxide killing germs is just a chemical reaction: much like the fizzing you get from pouring soda into a glass. It doesn’t disinfect the glass. It just looks cool. SIDE NOTE: PURE PEROXIDE, as in 100% Peroxide, can eat through METAL. Even the over-the-counter-solution can kill perfectly healthy skin

Helene White – Alcohol, Drugs and Violence among Youth – 5/5

Dr. Helene White’s lecture delivered at Eastern Kentucky University – College of Justice and Safety in November 2004 titled “Alcohol, Drugs and Violence among Youth” Helene Raskin White is a Professor of Sociology with a joint appointment at the Center of Alcohol Studies and the Sociology Department at Rutgers University. She conducts longitudinal research on substance use and other problem behaviors, including crime, violence and mental health disorders in normal and high-risk samples. Recently, she has become involved in the development, implementation and evaluation of brief alcohol and drug prevention programs for college students. Dr. White’s presentation focuses on alcohol and drug use as risk factors for youth violence. First, she describes the nature of associations between substance user and violence and then discusses various models that have been postulated to explain these associations. Finally, Dr. White describes her own research on alcohol, drug use and violence among adolescents and young adults. Her research on youth suggests that there are distinctions among types of drugs in the nature of their associations with violence and differences in the nature of the relationship depending on whether one is examining acute or developmental associations. She concludes with the implications of her research for the design of preventive interventions to reduce substance use-related violence among youth.
